Keep Your Processes Free From Hazards

On 25 August 2022, the Singapore Chemical Industry Council, the Association of Process Industry, and the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council jointly organised the quarterly Jurong Island Vision Zero (JIVZ) forum, which was well attended by close to 200 participants.  Now in its seventh run, the theme focused on “Keep your processes free from hazards”, which focused on good WSH practices in process safety.

In his opening address, Er. Lucas Ng, Chairman of the JIVZ Group, brought attention to the spate of fatal accidents in the recent months. He highlighted that having good WSH practices is crucial in developing robust operating systems and processes when handling hazardous substances. This is because the consequences that result from process safety lapses are often large scale, mostly involving damages to workplaces and loss of lives.

The Ministry of Manpower presented on past cases and the learning points from them, while Veolia ES Singapore Industrial Pte Ltd shared on its safety and health considerations and control measures implemented in a hazardous chemical waste treatment facility. Lastly, Shell Eastern Petroleum Pte Ltd shared examples of digitalisation and how it enhanced process safety management.

The forum rounded off with a robust panel discussion, where the audience asked about how WSH ownership can be strengthened and how companies could leverage technology in the process industry.
