Definition: Compressed Air Works
Compressed air works typically involve tunnelling works in the compressed air environment. Such works have been used in the construction of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system and Deep Tunnel Sewerage System in Singapore. Examples of compressed air works include inspection and replacement of tunnel boring machine cutting tools.
Workers who enter and/or carry out work in a compressed air environment are exposed to health hazards if compressed air works are not managed properly. Some associated health problems are decompression sickness and barotrauma.
As an employer, you are expected to comply with Singapore's WSH laws. You should pay particular attention to:
- WSH (Construction) Regulations
- WSH (Medical Examinations) Regulations
- WSH (Risk Management) Regulations
You are also required to send your workers who are exposed to occupational hazards of the compressed air environment for pre-placement and regular medical examinations. Refer to the MOM website for more information.
