About Asbestos

Learn about asbestos and understand the health risks. Comply with the relevant laws to protect yourself and your workers.

Definition: Asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral. Its fibres have excellent physical and chemical properties, which made it popular as a construction material, and useful for sound and thermal insulation.

However, exposure to asbestos, such as the inhalation of asbestos fibres, can lead to serious health risks, including lung diseases and cancer. Consequently, the use of asbestos in buildings was banned by the authorities since 1989.

Many old buildings in Singapore still contain asbestos. Asbestos can be released into the air when disturbed and affects building occupants. Therefore, it is important to manage asbestos in buildings and workplaces to prevent harmful exposure.
