Efforts, including the launch of a new guide, to help workers work safely around MEWPs

01 Aug 2022 Announcements

Mr Yam Ah Mee, Chairman of the WSH Council (Construction and Landscape) Committee, at the IPAF Asia Conference Showcase 2022 on 28 July announced the launch of the Workplace Safety and Health Council’s new Guide for Safe Use of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) and a pictogram poster on the 6 basic workplace safety and health rules for safe use of MEWPs.

In his opening address, Mr Yam shared that falls from heights has remained one of the top contributors of workplace fatalities and there had been seven fatal falls out of the 31 workplace fatalities this year. As the keynote speaker for the event, Mr Bernard Kwok, Deputy Director of the Engineering Safety Branch, gave an overview of the use of powered access in Singapore and discussed recommendations that ensure the safe use of powered access.

While MEWPs provide a safer means for working at height, accidents may happen if they are used improperly. It is imperative that MEWPs are used in accordance to manufacturers' recommendations.

To assist MEWP users, new resources have been developed to strengthen work-at-height processes of MEWP operations and increase situational awareness of workers on and around MEWPs.
