ChemPact: Community of Practice for the Chemical Industries, brought together senior leaders including plant owners, value-chain partners and industry stakeholders from the Chemical Industries to reaffirm a shared commitment to Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) excellence. Co-organised by the Singapore Chemical Industry Council (SCIC), the Association of Process Industry (ASPRI), and the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council, with support from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), the event provided a timely platform for leadership dialogue amid the ongoing transformation of the Chemical Industries landscape.

In his welcome address, Mr Lim Keng Yang, Chairman of the WSH Council (Chemical Industries) Committee highlighted that as the Chemical Industries undergo business consolidation and transition towards low-carbon fuels , upholding WSH standards and adopting of innovation have become critical business differentiators. He emphasised strong WSH performance goes beyond compliance, serving as a strategic enabler that supports talent retention, supply-chain confidence and business sustainability.

A key highlight at ChemPact was the launch of the WSH Indicators for the Chemical Industries, developed by the WSH Council, with inputs from industry stakeholders and the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). Drawing reference from established industry and national publications, the set of leading and lagging indicators is designed to help companies systematically monitor WSH performance, identify gaps early, and implement targeted improvements. Companies are encouraged to adapt the indicators according to their work processes.

The Innovation Projects Showcase was another highlight of the event, demonstrating how industry-led solutions, such as safer lifting systems, automation, digital safety platforms and engineered controls, can enhance safety, productivity and business value.

Key takeaways from the speakers:

  • Er. Randy Cha, Principal Specialist (Major Hazards Department), Ministry of Manpower shared that collaboration and information sharing across industry players remain vital in strengthening WSH ownership.
  • Mr Lai Man Wai, Singapore Refinery Manufacturing Director of ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. emphasised that leadership and shared WSH ownership across the supply chain are essential in shaping strong safety culture
  • Mr Chee Yuli, General Manager (Maintenance) of UTOC Engineering Pte. Ltd. highlighted that innovation and technology are critical enablers for managing emerging risks, improving productivity and WSH outcomes.

ChemPact concluded with a strong call for continued industry leadership and adoption of innovative WSH practices, as the Chemical Industries work together to build a safer and more resilient workplace.
