On 25 August, over 100 leaders from the built environment sector attended the Safety Leadership Forum at the Fullerton Hotel, highlighting the critical role played by developers in setting the WSH direction for construction projects. The event was organised by the Real Estate Developers’ Association of Singapore (REDAS), and supported by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council.

Mr Chia Ngiang Hong, President of REDAS, emphasised in his opening speech a collaborative leadership approach for building projects, where commitment and rapport are instilled and fostered amongst stakeholders in the value chain. Doing so enhances safety behaviours and motivates stakeholders to achieve positive WSH outcomes.

Mr Zaqy Mohamad, Senior Minister of State for Manpower, shared his concern on the construction industry’s WSH performance, where almost 40% of this year’s fatalities came from the industry. He spoke of a four-pronged approach to address the alarming spate of accidents, with the first two being stepping up enforcement and empowering workers to feedback on safety lapses. Mr Zaqy also cited the revised WSH Guidelines for Design for Safety, a useful resource to help companies have oversight as they incorporate safety upstream when planning and designing their projects. Lastly, he elaborated on cultivating greater WSH ownership, aided by an upcoming Code of Practice on Chief Executives’ and Board of Directors’ WSH Duties.

Mr Yam Ah Mee, Chairman of the WSH Council (Construction and Landscape) Committee, moderated a panel discussion with SMS Zaqy and guest speakers, where there was a candid and lively discussion on leadership, ownership and culture-building processes to improve WSH.
