Close to 200 healthcare managers, professionals and staff attended the WSH e-Forum for Healthcare Workers, organised by the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council and supported by Tan Tock Seng Hospital on 25 September 2020. Themed “Taking Care of the Safety & Health of Carers – A New Normal beyond COVID-19”, the e-forum emphasised the continued importance of WSH in the new normal, and showcased the physical and mental well-being programmes and strategies adopted by healthcare institutions and organisations to help staff navigate these extremely challenging times.
In his opening remarks, Adjunct Professor Eugene Soh, Chairman of WSH Council (Healthcare) Committee, thanked the healthcare workers for their selfless contributions and unwavering efforts in keeping the nation safe. He reminded the industry that even more so now, as healthcare workers are subjected to immense stress in a high-risk working environment, there needs to be a renewed impetus to embrace WSH holistically, to protect their safety, health and well-being.
Participants gained insight into looking at WSH holistically through the sharing by guest speakers from various healthcare institutions and the industry:
• Singapore General Hospital illustrated how the three components of WSH – occupational health, occupational safety and well-being – are closely intertwined and how we can adopt this approach to improve the physical and mental well-being of healthcare workers during COVID-19 and beyond.
• Tan Tock Seng Hospital highlighted the need in caring for staff and their well-being in times of crisis such as the pandemic, and shared the strategies and efforts that the organisation has put in place.
• Johnson & Johnson shared on the importance of maintaining the health and wellness of its employees and how they have done so through the programmes and initiatives implemented.
Participants also engaged in a lively Q&A session, moderated by Professor Teo Yik Ying, Dean, Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health and Deputy Chairman of WSH Council (Healthcare) Committee, and were able to glean further learning points on the finer details of how they can implement WSH holistically and effectively on the ground.
During the e-forum, participants were invited to take part in the National WSH Campaign persona quiz, to find out how healthy they really are to stay safe at work.
