Held on 22 November, the bizSAFE Convention 2023 saw the inking of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the WSH Council and five SME Centres to enhance SMEs’ WSH capabilities. Witnessed by Guest of Honour, Mr Zaqy Mohamad, Senior Minister of State for Manpower, the MOU calls for Centres’ Business Advisors to be trained to enhance their WSH knowledge, more publicity of SME-related services and events, and greater dissemination of guidance materials to SMEs.   

In his Opening Address, SMS Zaqy highlighted that SME employees accounted for about seven in ten fatal and major injuries in 2022 alone. Despite the challenges faced by SMEs, he urged them to cultivate a robust WSH culture. SMS Zaqy also emphasised that the WSH Council has developed various resources, such as the START Guide for SMEs, to support the SMEs in their WSH journey. 

Part of the Convention also celebrated deserving recipients of the  bizSAFE Awards 2023 that have demonstrated outstanding commitment to improving WSH standards. In total, 41 companies and individuals were recognised across four categories – the bizSAFE Partner Award, bizSAFE Enterprise Exemplary Award, bizSAFE Champion Award, and the newly introduced WSH Tech Award.

Apart from an informative sharing on enforcement and regulations by the Ministry of Manpower, participants also engaged in a panel discussion, In Conversation: “Regulations are robust but not foolproof: What is good enough?”, focused on regulatory effectiveness to safeguard lives at work, while emphasising the need for companies to go beyond regulatory compliance to achieve WSH proficiency.  The event was attended by close to 420 guests.
