About the Competition

The annual Safety Starts with Me Competition is a platform for members of the public to showcase their creativity in promoting workplace safety and health (WSH) through art, design, photography, film and writing.

Why You Should Participate

As a winner in this national competition, your work will be featured on our website, exhibitions and social media channels, and possibly used as a training resource for the industry and workers. You will also receive attractive prizes.

Competition Theme

The theme for 2021 is "Take time to take care of your safety and health". You can illustrate this theme in your entries through any of the following focus areas:

  • Staying healthy at work;
  • Staying safe while driving and working near vehicles;
  • Preventing hand injuries when using machines; or
  • Working safely at heights.

If you are a student or youth at work, you can illustrate the theme in your entries through your daily activities in and outside of school, campus or work.

About This Category

This category focuses on stories and poems based on the competition theme.

Who May Apply

If you are a secondary school student, you may apply under the student category. If you are not, you may apply under the open category, which is open to all members of the public.

Your story or poem must:

  • Not be more than 500 words;
  • Be typed on an A4 document, using a 12pt font size and single-spacing; and
  • Be original. Entries from previous years will not be accepted.

Creative Photography

About This Category

This category focuses on photographs based on the competition theme. Your entry should explore the relationship between workers and the workplace risks that they have to face every day.

You may take photographs of people at work or in their workplace, and your subjects can be from any industry.

Who May Apply

This category is open to all members of the public.

What You Can Win

If you are:

  • A primary or secondary school student, you may apply under the student category.
  • A migrant worker residing in Singapore with a valid work pass or permit , you may apply under the worker's category.

If you are neither a student or a worker, you may apply under the open category, which is open to all members of the public.

Your A3-sized poster:

  • Can be a single poster or part of a series of posters.
  • Must be original. Entries that copy or spoof existing local or foreign poster designs, and entries from previous years will not be accepted.

Animation and Short Film

About This Category

This category focuses on animations or short films based on the competition theme. Your entry must reflect issues related to workplace safety and health, and the lives of workers.

Who May Apply

This category is open to all members of the public. You may apply as an individual or a team. Your team should not have more than five people.

What You Can Win

Depending on the category you apply under, you can win the following cash prizes:

What to Submit

Your animation or short film:

  • Can be fictitious or factual.
  • Can feature you or your team members.
  • Can use computer graphics and digital effects such as 2D, 3D and stop-motion.
  • Can be made in any language. If you do not use English, you must provide English subtitles.
  • Must be original. Entries from previous years will not be accepted. Corporate or training videos on workplace safety and health will also be rejected.
  • Must not be currently scheduled. Entries that have been in general release or shown on broadcast television will also be rejected.
  • Must be between one and three minutes.

As an individual or team, you may submit more than one entry.

Video Competition for Workers

If you have a love for singing, dancing or acting, here is your chance to showcase your talents. Created in collaboration between the WSH Council and the Migrant Workers’ Centre, this category focuses on videos based on the theme "Take time to take care when working at heights".

Who May Apply

If you are a local worker or a migrant worker with a valid work pass or permit, you can apply to take part in this category. You may apply as an individual or a team. Your team should not have more than 5 people.

What You Can Win

You will win $200 if your entry is selected as one of our 10 winning entries.

What to Submit

Everyday workers, like you or your friends, put themselves at risk when working at heights. Use your smartphone to record a song, dance, rap, jingle, act or story that:

  • Expresses your appreciation and thanks to your fellow workers for working safely at height;
  • Reminds your fellow workers to stay safe when working at height; or
  • Shares a story based on your experience or encounters from working at height.

Your video must be between 1 and 3 minutes. It can be recorded in English, Chinese, Tamil, Hindi, Bengali, Myanmese, Tagalog or Bahasa Melayu.

Submission Format
